The project

智•好瞓 Smart Sleep is a large-scale research program funded by the Research Grants Council’s Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS). It studies how sleep and circadian rhythms shape adolescents’ mental and emotional development, with three aims:

  • Mechanisms — untangle the pathways linking sleep and mental health
  • Early warning — build AI models that predict sleep and mental-health risks from multimodal everyday data
  • Precision intervention — deliver personalized, AI-assisted sleep and circadian interventions that can be deployed in schools

The study follows a cohort of 6,000 adolescents across 63 secondary schools in Hong Kong.

The app

SmartSleep is how participants take part day to day: it collects the daily sleep, mood, and questionnaire data that feed into the project. As a research assistant on the project, I develop the app and the internal content-management system (CMS) the research team uses to manage participants, questionnaires, and study schedules.

  • Daily sleep diaries and mood diaries, including audio and video entries
  • Questionnaires and self-assessments organized by study phase, with version matching
  • Scheduled reminders that keep participants on track with research tasks
  • Offline drafts that sync automatically once the network is back
